I'm not entirely sure how or when the idea first came to me - and indeed why I hadn't thought of it a long time ago - but here it is... ownMySite.com!
I'm certainly not adverse to spending money online, in fact I have practically kept some well known bookmakers in business over the last few years. Add in online share trading and booking holidays etc, I have probably spent a small fortune on the web. That's not to say that I haven't had some great holidays and made some money in the process.
So as I type my card details into yet another online merchant I can't help noticing the links encouraging me to sign up to become an affiliate. Affiliate schemes allow web publishers to place retailer links on their sites with the aim of introducing new customers and the publisher earns a small commission in the process. So every time I click through to a retailer from a comparison site or review site and spend money, the referring site is making a commission for introducing me.
So it's an obvious idea but why not create a comprehensive directory of online retailers with the sole aim of returning some of this commission to the people who earned it - YOU! So shoppers know they can come to ownMySite.com and find the retailer of their choice in the knowledge that they will be making some money in the process.
Now I know there is nothing original about the idea of sharing revenue with users but there is one thing that makes ownMySite.com very different to anything else on the web. You - the users - own a stake in the site simply based on how much you use it. We have created the world's first website where users can own a stake in the business by simply using it.
